Thoughts on the Oscar Nominations

I'm going to preface this by stating that I haven't seen ANY of the movies in the top categories.  This is based off  the previews or clips and in most cases I'm sure I'm completely off.  I also know the movies that hold up and are viewed time and time again or that make us laugh our asses off aren't usually noticed; I'm very happy "Bridesmaid's" was included in a few categories.  I personally didn't think it was funny but a know numerous folks that did.  Here we go folks!

Best Picture:
"The Artist"- It's a silent picture. Didn't we decide long ago that "talkies" were the way to go?  Yeah... This screams of Hollywood tooting out a movie showcasing that acting is a craft.  I bet numerous people will say they loved it- the majority of which just love the idea of loving it, but they'll hate it.

"The Descendants"- Cloney.  That's about all I know.  I usually like his stuff, although I fell asleep 3 or 4 times during that airplane one.  It bored me death, I hope this isn't one of those...

"Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close"- I don't know anything about it.  It's one where the title intrigues me but I'd have to get some opinions from quality people before spending the time to watch it.
"The Help"- This is about the migrant worker that came to assist the "I've fallen and I can't get up" lady, right?

"Hugo"- I like Martin Scorsese's stuff a lot but I'm not sure if I care to see a movie about a boy that lives in a clock with a robot friend.

"Midnight in Paris"- The title reminds me of multiple 80's movies that I would rent as a kid in the hopes to see some actress' boobs but never did.  I bet this one sucks too.

"Moneyball"- Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill are great, and it's movie based around baseball economics that kind of worked for a little bit but not really any more.  This one gets my vote so far.

"The Tree of Life"- It was one of Gustav Klimit's most famous work done during his golden age, painted around 1909 and done in the same style as "The Kiss" and "Mother and Child" which most people recognize.  A very beautiful work of art that I love.  I don't know shit about the movie.

"War Horse"- A Disney flick about a horse that saves WWII from the Germans and unites a family across Austria?

Best Actor-  I'm going to go with Gary Oldman.  It's the first time he's been nominated; he plays the best bad guy ever (Dracula, Zoog in 5th Element, Carnegie in the Book of Eli) and as Chief Gordon he rocked.  Due to the movies I named being great but not something Hollywood would ever own up to as quality I think he'll get shafted for some foreign dude in  a movie you might watch once..

Best Actress:  I like Rooney Mara; again knowing it will probably go to Meryl Streep or Glenn Close.  I hope it's not Streep.  On sheer hotness factor Michelle Williams should get it for her full frontal of the gay cowboy flick.  She's too hot now for them to give her the Oscar.  They'll wait till she's haggard like Streep or Close.  Remember these are the same people that keep trying to tell us Anne Hathaway and Sarah Jessica Parker aren't a Dallas 6.

Best Director: I'd love for Woody Allen to get the nod, but I appreciate both Scorsese and Terrence Malick.  If any of those 3 win I'll be happy.

Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, & Visual Effects:
For all you haters of Transformers and Micheal Bay's blow em up big budget movies this is one category that it should own.  Any audiophile or home theater wizard will tell you Transformers is Amazing on a great system.  This is a guy's movie, we compartmentalize all the negatives for the ability to see Rock em Sock em Robots on the big screen.  It has explosions and demolitions, guns, awesome cars, robots, and a great scene of a wingsuit flight through downtown Chicago.
